Ask a general AI chat to draft an email or explain a concept, and it is superb. Ask it ‘what did I promise Anna in March?’ and it can do only one of two things: admit it has no idea, or make something up fluently. The gap is not intelligence—it is sources. A generic chat reasons over the world's text; it has never seen your week.
What a general chat is genuinely for
Drafting, rewriting, explaining, brainstorming, coding: wherever the answer comes from general knowledge plus whatever you paste into the window, a large model with a blank slate is the right tool, and nothing about a personal memory system replaces it.
Pasting context is not memory
You can feed a chatbot your notes—today's, manually, every time. That makes you the retrieval system: you must remember which notes matter, find them, and paste them before asking. Each conversation starts cold; nothing accumulates. And when context is missing, a general model fills the gap with plausibility—exactly the failure mode you cannot afford in questions about your own commitments.
What grounding in your history changes
A memory interface answers from your record, not from the average of the internet:
- Answers are assembled from your notes, voice memos, and photos—retrieved by meaning, not by whether you remembered to paste them.
- Every claim carries its source: the answer links to the note, with its date, and one tap opens the original.
- When the history holds no answer, the honest response is ‘nothing saved about that’—not an improvisation.
Trust is an inspection, not a feeling
The dangerous property of fluent answers is that wrong ones read exactly like right ones. The fix is structural: an answer about your life must be checkable against your record. ‘You agreed on the 14th—here is the voice note’ is a different class of statement from ‘you probably agreed around mid-month.’ One closes the question; the other opens a search.
Use a general chat for the world's knowledge and for text work. For questions about your own decisions, promises, and history, an answer is only as good as its sources—and the sources have to be yours.
