Capture every observation with its birth certificate: when, under what conditions, from which source or instrument. An observation that cannot be placed in time cannot participate in a sequence—and sequences are where findings live. Version your hypothesis like it matters

Ask questions that span months

The payoff is being able to interrogate the whole timeline: everything touching one variable, every note where you doubted the method, the sequence of revisions between the first anomaly and the current model. Answers assemble from observations, voice commentary, and photographed whiteboards—in order, with dates, each one openable to verify against the original.

What belongs in the informal layer

The formal record—data, protocols, results—is already handled by instruments and files. The informal layer is what disappears, and it is what makes the formal record interpretable two years later:

  • Conditions that were not in the protocol: the room was cold, the reagent was from a new batch, you were rushing.
  • The corridor remark: a colleague's offhand objection that turns out to be the explanation.
  • Why a run was discarded—the single most commonly lost and most frequently needed fact.

Where a personal record must not be the record

This layer is a thinking aid, not a lab notebook, and the distinction matters legally and professionally. Anything with regulatory, patent, or institutional weight belongs in whatever formal system your field requires, with its signatures, versioning, and audit trail intact. A searchable personal archive sits alongside that; it does not replace it.

There are also constraints a general-purpose tool cannot satisfy on its own. Human-subjects data, anything identifiable, and material under a data-management plan or an NDA have storage requirements that are specified for you—and a convenient app is not automatically a compliant one. Check before capturing, not after.

The honest limit on the method itself is that recorded interpretation is still interpretation. Writing down your hunch and dating it protects you from hindsight bias, which is real and useful; it does not make the hunch correct, and a long trail of confidently recorded guesses can look like accumulating evidence when it is only accumulating text. The correction is to record what would change your mind at the same time you record the belief—so the archive can tell you when it did.
